EDUCATION
The New Bedford school district is in the process of major school upgrades and consolidations, and rebuilding in recent years. Keith Middle School was the most recent school to get this same attention. The New Bedford Public Schools System provides great opportunities for individuals seeking a higher level education at local colleges like the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth or Bristol Community College. Both offer an easily accessible downtown campus and quality programs.
ECONOMY AND JOB MARKET
With the booming industrial parks and downtown office buildings, you’ll be sure to find great opportunities for your career. New Bedford stays strong by promoting the fishing industry of old and highlighting the increasingly diverse modern career options available. And with the approved proposal of the South Coast Rail project, it’s most certain that New Bedford’s economy will experience a significant boon. Construction will begin in 2012 with an estimated time for completion in 2016. In addition to providing public transportation to the South Coast area and connecting residents from New Bedford to Boston, the new South Coast rail will “increase transit accessibility…increase transit ridership, improve regional air quality, and support opportunities for smart growth initiatives and sustainable development.”
PARKS and RECREATION
New Bedford is in part characterized by its large and well-maintained parks and public beaches. Several parks and playgrounds can be found in different parts of the city, giving easy access to everyone regardless of the location you live. Brooklawn Park is located at the North end of the city and is considered the largest, with Fort Taber Park, Clark’s Point and Buttonwood Park close behind. Inside the city you’ll find the Buttonwood Zoo that has a lagoon feeding into Buttonwood Brook and the surrounding area. Acushnet Cedar Swamp Reservation is a great draw to visitors in the Northwest part of the city. Be sure not to miss the New Bedford Whaling Museum and the National Historical Park that surrounds it.
